What is a Canadian Study Permit?
A Canadian study permit is a document that allows you to pursue your education in Canada. Once accepted at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), you can apply for it and start learning!
How Long Does it Take to Apply for a Canadian Study Permit?
The shortest processing time is 2 weeks under the Student Direct Stream for certain countries, but some applicants can expect to wait as long as 16-20 weeks. Processing times depend on the volume of applications received and if you’re applying close to Canada’s academic year beginning then delays will most likely occur in your application process.
What are the steps?
Step 1: Understand the Requirements
Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian study permit. You will need:
- an acceptance letter from a DLI,
- proof of financial support,
- supporting documents
Step 2: Choose your Course and Institution
Your program choice is one of the most important factors in your successful study permit application. You must present a strong case for studying abroad and wanting to do so with Canada’s help as we make recommendations based on what can be best achieved by each individual, but also considering work experience or education history which gives them an edge over others vying for this scholarship opportunity.
Step 3: Take the Language Proficiency Test
Proving your English or French language skills is a necessary step for any international student wanting to study in Canada. Some institutions are only accepting the IELTS or TOEFL tests, while others can accept students even with Duolingo.
Step 4: Apply to Universities or Colleges
It’s time to make your list, contact universities and colleges and submit all required documents well in advance. You will have the choice of applying for dozens or even a hundred colleges but it is important not just apply at random; compare costs with other institutions that interest you – you may find one better than expected!
Step 5: Apply for a Study Permit
If you meet all eligibility requirements then it’s time to start preparing your study permit application. Make sure that you have gathered any and every document required.
Step 6: Travel Time
When your study permit application is approved, it’s time to start planning for the journey. Remember that you won’t be able to enter Canada before this date and make arrangements accordingly! When you arrive at the Canadian port of entry, an immigration officer will check your documents and verify that they are in order. You can then prepare for entry into Canada without further delay!
What Happens After Your Studies are Completed?
Typically, international students who have graduated from a study program want to get a post-graduation work permit immediately after their studies so they can work in Canada. This open work permit allows holders to work anywhere in Canada, as many hours as they wish and with any employer!
