For individuals who plan to become self-employed in Canada and contribute significantly to the cultural, artistic, or athletic life of Canada (such as with a high level of expertise), this category is for you. This immigration category is designed to attract outstanding individuals who want to represent Canada as professional athletes or world-class artists. You must demonstrate that you intend to become self-employed in Canada.
Eligibility requirements under the Self-Employed Persons Program
People interested in working as self-employed individuals in Canada should apply to the Self-Employed Program. An applicant may be accepted into this program if:
– Have work experience that is relevant (starting five years before the application’s filing date and continuing through the day a decision is made on the application), which is defined as At least two years of experience participating in cultural or athletic activities at a World-class level; At least two years of self-employment in cultural activities or athletics
– You must fulfill the criteria for self-employed individuals
– Passing medical and security screenings
– Demonstrate a high level of financial reserves
Work experience for Self-Employed Persons Program
For a self-employed applicant, two years of relevant experience is required. It must be during the five-year span preceding the day you submit your application and ending on the day CIC makes its ultimate decision on it. The experience should date back at least two years before the day you apply to IRCC.
Work experience for artists
- Two one-year periods being self-employed in cultural activity, OR
- Two one-year periods participating at a world-class level in cultural activities, OR
- A combination of a one-year period described in A and a one-year period described in B
Work experience for athletes
- Two one-year periods being self-employed in athletics, OR
- Two one-year periods participating at a world-class level in athletics, OR
- A combination of a one-year period described in A and one-year period described in B
