What is a Study Permit?
The study permit in Canada is a temporary resident status. It is for students who wish to pursue full-time studies at an institution that offers courses and programs of interest like College, University or another post-secondary institution. The student must have been accepted by the school before applying for a student visa from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The process of application is not complicated but it does require some time to complete. Study permits are not restricted to a particular type of program, from vocational training to academic programs.
A Study Permit allows students from other countries to legally enter Canada to study at an approved school in the country. Study permits may allow you to stay in Canada for the length of your studies. Study permits also give international students the opportunity to gain legal work experience in Canada. As a student, you can apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) which allows you to work on or off-campus without any restrictions depending on study permit guidelines. Study Permits may be valid from six months up to five years depending on their length of study and visa status.
Student Eligibility
Study permits can be granted to students who are accepted by educational institutions. They are typically issued for the time period needed to complete studies in Canada, however, they may be extended or renewed depending on the rules.
What are the requirement for a study permit?
Students must meet all requirements set out by the Government of Canada. A study permit is not issued to those with criminal records, ties to organized crime or health problems. A study permit application can be submitted online or offline.
