A Canadian work permit is a permission to take a job within Canada if you are from abroad. You need one in order for your employment here, but in some cases, it’s possible to work on jobs that do not require them at all.
Typically, obtaining a Canadian work permit is not as simple as it might sound. In most cases, applicants will first require an offer from their prospective employer before they can apply for the necessary permission to enter Canada and do jobs there legally.
Step 1
In the vast majority of cases, Canadian employers are required to undertake domestic recruitment efforts and demonstrate that no permanent residents or citizens can fill their open position. This is often done by submitting a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application for approval from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) before starting any hiring process with foreign workers abroad.
Step 2
After receiving an LMIA decision by the propective employer, the applicant can apply for Canadian work permits on that basis. Work Permits are employer-specific unless an individual has open permit status.
The Duration of the document
Canadian work permits have an expiry date. The only way to stay in Canada permanently or for an unspecified length of time is through permanent resident status. The Canadian government places limits on the length of time that non-Canadians can work in Canada.
What is an open work permit?
An open work permit (OWP) is a document that allows you to work for any employer in Canada. This differs from a WP which restricts you to working for the employer listed on your document. Spouses of international students and workers may also get an OWP. Additionally, international graduates can get a Post Graduate Work Permit, which also allows working for any employer.
Can You Turn from a foreign worker to Permanent Resident?
After working in Canada for 12 months in NOC A, B or O skill level job full-time (or equivalent), a worker can apply for permeant residence through the Canadian Experience Class or even earlier than 12 months based on job offer related streams of provincial immigration programs.
